Children and Young people hearing voices

"An really eye-opening approach to understanding voice hearing in children and young people. It has taught me much about effective ways of supporting children and young people who hear voices."

- Sarah - mental health worker

course description

Though traditionally seen as an illness or a disease, voice hearing in children and young people has been linked in modern research with the way children and young people feel and what they've been though in life. Thus, in this course, we look extensively at a psychologically-orientated approach to hearing voices in children and young people, an approach that is generally organized around the following three questions:

What is voice hearing in children and young people?

How do you understand voice hearing in children and young people?

How do you deal with voice hearing in children and young people?

course objectives

Briefly, the course's objectives are to help you:

1) Understand and explain the origin of voice hearing in children and young people in unprocessed emotions related to things children and young people have been through in their lives

2) Understand the fundamental importance of learning to feel safe when you're a child or young person who is struggling with hearing voices

3) Understand the need for children to identify, build on and learn new strategies for coping with voices, including simple techniques for talking to the voices in the "right way"

4) Understand the need to (a) gain insight and awareness into the problems that lead to and the emotions that tend to underlie the voices that children and young people hear, and the need (b) to learn to deal with these problems and emotions in better ways

5) Understand the need to help children and young people make sense of their voices in terms of their life histories and the unprocessed emotional component of their experiences by way of a method of "connecting the dots"
